William returns to England

On 26th July 1925, William sent yet another letter to the Repat. Dept. advising them he would be travelling to London on or about 10th September. The return address of the letter was “S.S. Melbourne”, Lyttleton, New Zealand. He also gave his address in London as “S.S. Melbourne”, c/o The Commonwealth Dominion Line, Fenchurch St., London. No record of his departure for New Zealand or London can be found but William did arrive in London and the Ministry of Pensions in Whitehall was aware of it.

Very little documentation exists during William’s stay in England, however, a piece of information supplied later by William, leads to a discovery that had not been known to the authorities.

Skipping forward to 22nd August 1930, in Kalgoorlie, W.A., William filled out form entitled “Special Identification Form for Officers in Receipt of Disability Retired Pay Etc.” Question 10, on the form, asked if he was married? He filled in a date and place of marriage.
